Wharf in Newport, Rhode Island
The story of Newport is intertwined with the richest and most influential families in American history. Remnants of its past still remain today in the form of charming hotels and some of the best, most romantic restaurants in New England. Here are seven of our favorite spots for a romantic night out in Rhode Island’s most celebrated town:
White Horse Tavern
White Horse Tavern’s biggest claim to fame is that it’s allegedly the oldest restaurant in America. Whether that’s literally true or not is almost irrelevant as the property dates back to 1673. In the ensuing centuries, the interior has been meticulously preserved and offers a warm, cozy atmosphere that’s clearly inspired by the state’s colonial past. A contemporary, upscale, farm-to-table menu is offered alongside classic and unique rum cocktails.

Inn at Castle Hill
We’ve previously touted Castle Hill Inn as the single most romantic spot in all of Newport. Sipping a cocktail from the hotel’s private lawn with sweeping views of the bay is the ideal way to while away a New England afternoon. The on-site restaurant is situated on the first floor of this historic Victorian mansion which offers fireside dining in a regal, elegant atmosphere. The restaurant offers lunch, however, the biggest draws are dinner and Sunday brunch. The former is a mix of contemporary American cuisine with a menu that’s well-balanced between land and sea options.
Spiced Pear
Situated in the classic Chanler hotel, the swanky Spiced Pear restaurant offers upscale fireside dining and a beautiful outdoor terrace with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The monochromatic black and cream decor is warm, inviting, and luxurious without feeling stuffy. The a la carte menu is heavily inspired by New England seafood, along with subtle French influences. A full-fledged tasting menu pairs a rotating selection of local and seasonal dishes with wines from around the world.
22 Bowen’s
A stroll along Bowen’s Wharf is a staple on any tourist’s tour of Newport. 22 Bowen’s Wine Bar & Grille is a long-time institution on the town’s dining scene. With a rustic, yet upscale interior, the atmosphere is classy and romantic, yet perfect for couples who aren’t interested in stuffy, suit-jacket-required dining. The dining menu is seafood-heavy (the lobster and corn fritters are particularly amazing), with a selection of meat and vegetarian options as well.

Mama Luisa Ristorante Italiano
For diners who fancy a “night out” at grandma’s house, Mama Luisa Ristorante Italiano is just what you’re looking for. The twenty-five-year-old eatery offers just a few dining rooms with only a handful of tables between them. The menu is like a culinary tour of Italy with notable favorites like Spaghetti Carbonara, Ravioli di Zucca, and four kinds of Bruschette. Hours are as limited as their seating — just 5 pm to 10 pm, six days a week — so it’s essential to go early or reserve well in advance.
The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar
As part of Rhode Island’s wildly successful Newport Restaurant Group, The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar shares some of the same DNA as 22 Bowen’s and Castle Hill Inn. It’s no surprise that the atmosphere is upscale and classy with a distinct lack of stuffiness — the perfect spot for a date night. While the menu changes regularly, expect a mostly seafood selection with options like a Lobster Croissant Sandwich, Georges Bay Scallops, and Grilled Ahi Tuna. Particularly noteworthy is the Seafood Pasta, with lobster, shrimp, sea scallops, tomato-garlic butter sauce, fresh herbs, angel hair pasta. As an added bonus, the restaurant offers excellent views of Narragansett Bay.

Bouchard Inn & Restaurant
The restaurant at the Bouchard Inn is a slice of Newport history with a heavy French influence. The menu is inspired accordingly with typical ingredients including puff pastry, heavy bisques, and rich cream sauces. One particular standout is the Homard et St. Jacques Cardinal Gratinée — an over-the-top concoction consisting of restuffed roasted lobster and scallops with truffle, gruyere cheese, and lobster sauce. It’s nearly impossible to save room for the desserts du jour here, but, trust us, you’ll want to. The atmosphere is only slightly more formal than the other restaurants on this list. Business casual attire is expected and the restaurant only welcomes children seven years or older.
While there’s plenty to see, do, and eat on land in Newport, the best way to see the town is from the water. For an authentic and romantic Newport experience, set sail aboard a genuine America’s Cup 12-meter yacht. The two-hour tour passes some of the area’s most historic and well-known landmarks including Fort Adams, Newport Pell Bridge, and the lovely Rose Island Lighthouse.
